Wrote the book "Ghost Squad" based on his own experiences as a founder member of the New Scotland Yard Squad of the same name. The squad, under the command of Detective Inspector John Capstick (nickname "Charlie Artful"), operated mainly within the East End of London, and although detectives, were never identified personally or carried out arrests. Their role was to gather intelligence and then pass information on to members of The Flying Squad or divisional CID. John Gosling remained the only ever-present officer throughout the squad's existence, eventually retiring as a Detective Superintendent. In retirement he wrote and acted as a technical advisor on police procedures and issues. His book "Ghost Squad" was used as the basis for the UK police drama Ghost Squad, which ran from 1961-63 and he acted as police technical advisor on "The Informers" (1963).
